A ridiculously good value-priced blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay from the Gamble Family Estate in the heart of the Napa Valley!

The (Gamble Family) Mill Keeper White Wine Napa Valley 2021 is a blend of fresh, lively Sauvignon Blanc and round, fruity Chardonnay. As some of you may recall from these pages before, the Gamble Family Sauvignon Blanc is one of the best in the valley. But did you know that Gamble’s Chardonnay fruit is the foundation of the Beringer Reserve Chardonnay program? Crazy, right?

Together, that blend of 70% Sauvignon Blanc, 30% Chardonnay aged in 21% new French Oak for 10 months delivers an easier, rounder hypothetical mash-up of those two wines. The Sauvignon gives vibrancy and focus, and the Chardonnay provides an ample middle. What a ‘white wine’ for the money!

97 Points! Blackcurrant, graphite, lavender, mint and stone aromas. Full and flavorful but remains lightly austere in the best sense, giving it tannic tension. It’s a stunning wine that brings beautiful depth and richness as well as classic Cabernet Sauvignon notes of cassis, leafy herbs, tobacco, and chocolate. Layers of blackberry, black cherry, and cassis, accented by subtle notes of graphite, tobacco, and warm spice. The palate is plush but structured, with ripe dark fruit, fine-grained tannins, and enough acidity to keep everything balanced and fresh. It’s smooth and approachable now with a little air, but clearly has the structure to age nicely over the next several years.

93 Points! Readers looking for more immediate gratification should seek out the seductive, sexy 2003 The Maiden. It offers lots of cedarwood, white chocolate, black currant and damp forest notes in a medium to full-bodied, round, generous style with all the oak absorbed. The acidity provides good vibrancy, but no tartness, and the tannins are not astringent. This spicy, open-knit, fleshy 2003 is showing extremely well at present. From the winery: The concept of the Nocturnal Series gives winemaker/owner Jason Driscoll the ability to work with multiple sites across the valley. These sites are exceptional in their own rights, and bring a sense of the region to the bottling. But these sites might also be our first time farming them or to even get access we sign the ever protective NDA. This vintage comes from sites in Rutherford and Oakville.

From the winery: 98% Sauvignon Blanc, 1% Albarino and 1% Muscat Canelli - 88% stainless steel fermented with the remainder barrel fermented in neutral French oak and Acacia barrels. Largely from the Stewart Ranch with its toes in the estuary south of the city of Napa. It is a late developing site and its tropical flavors, crisp acidity and cool climate chemistry add zip to the lovely riper Windy Flats Clone 1 grapefruit character. After ferment, the wine was racked to neutral oak, acacia, and stainless-steel barrels to rest until bottling in January after a brief fining and settling.

90 Points! The 2021 Barrel Blend is composed of 34% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Zinfandel, 13% Malbec, 10% Petit Sirah, 9% Syrah, and 4% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it bursts with ready to go notes of juicy plums and cassis, giving way to nuances of dried mint, spice cake, and licorice. Full-bodied, the palate is chock fruit of blackberry and plum preserves flavors with a soft texture and bags of freshness, finishing on a peppery note. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, MW

Another beautiful wine as well as a smoking value, the 2021 Merlot Blueline Estate (75% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Sauvignon, and tiny amounts of Petit Verdot and Malbec) has lots of up-front plum and black cherry fruits supported by lead pencil, chocolate, and savory herb aromas and flavors. 100 Points! The 2021 Few and Far Between Cabernet Sauvignon includes 10% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple colored, it comes barreling out of the glass with notes of blueberry compote, juicy black plums, and warm cassis, giving way to hints of candied violets, cinnamon stick, and iron ore. The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Morgan's Way comes from old volcanic and clay soils (there's some obsidian as well), and it reminded me of great vintage of Le Pin from Pomerol with its exotic, sexy, full-bodied, incredibly gorgeous profile. Offering ripe red and black fruits, spicy oak, vanilla, lead pencil, and tobacco-like aromas and flavors, it's impossible to resist today, but this has 20 years of life ahead of it as well.
