Another ripe, sexy, exuberant Gigondas, the 2022 Gigondas Vieilles Vignes reveals a vibrant ruby/purple hue as well as youthful aromatics of black raspberries, sandalwood, ground pepper, and herbes de Provence-like nuances. This sunny, medium to full-bodied 2022 has sweet tannins, a supple, elegant mouthfeel, and a great finish. It's a beautiful wine in the vintage that I suspect will drink nicely over the coming decade. - Jeb Dunnuck

The 2022 Gaba do Xil O Barreiro is from their own vineyards, 15 to 16 hectares in Larouco on red granite soils from a transitional place between granite and slate. 2022 was a warm year, a rounder and gentler vintage, and the wine is a little riper at 13% alcohol. Godello behaves differently from the single vineyards and has a rounder mouthfeel. It also has a more reductive profile, fruit-driven and with notes of flowers and herbs. The blend is 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 10% Petit Verdot. The wine sees 18 months of aging with up to 70% new oak, but the trick, proprietor Lamberto Frescobaldi tells me, is drawing from a large group of coopers with different toast levels and forests. "I don't want to make a wine of any one tonnellerie," he says. The oak element is crucial to the identity of this wine that reveals dark fruit, blackberry, sweet spice and cinnamon. Most of the vines were planted in the 1980s, and the average age of the plants is over 20 years old. Fruit comes from many parcels, including Bellaria, Bellaria Nuova, Bellaria Alta, Pero, Fosso, Vigna Vecchia and Stallina. Indeed, some 80 wines are made before final blending. The 2022 vintage will be remembered for its full-bodied appeal, concentrated fruit and generous oak renderings. Petit Verdot plays a slightly larger role in this vintage and was one of the surprise hits of 2022. It serves to elongate the wine and adds to its length. Made with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, the Tenuta San Guido 2022 Guidalberto gives you a good taste of the same DNA that brings us one of Italy's greatest wines, Sassicaia, but it's offered in a more immediate style here (thanks to the addition of the Merlot). This warm vintage opens to medium-dark concentration and very plump aromas that take you immediately to blackberry and blackcurrant sitting out in the sun at your local farmers market. The wine shows a soft and gentle side with a pretty level of elegance transmitted through the fruit freshness and the light oak spice that is discernible here but delivered with grace. - Monica Larner, robertparker.com

94 Points! Lots of mint with sage and fresh rosemary to the currant and orange character on the nose, as well as some ripe raspberries. The palate is very refined with creamy and crunchy tannins that run the length of the wine. It shows a crunchy and energetic personality. 92 Points! The 2022 Le Difese is plump, juicy and expressive, all of which make it a fine choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Crushed flowers, succulent red cherry fruit, mint, spice and blood orange all race across the palate. This exuberant yet mid-weight coastal Tuscan red is a total pleasure bomb. The 2022 is an especially fine edition. It benefits from a warm year - which can be a positive for entry-level wines - earlier bottling and selection. Le Difese 2022 is a blend of 55% Sangiovese and 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, the former brought in from long-standing partners based in Chianti and Chianti Rufina – ‘In Bolgheri it's not easy to find Sangiovese,’ third-generation Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta explained. 2022 saw slightly lower production than 2021 due to a warm spring and a rainy autumn. Macerations were shorter than previous years, and the wine retains the same blend as last year as part of the estate's continuing plans to make Le Difese approachable almost immediately and give it its own Tuscan identity. Bright red and purple scents with a creamy backdrop and herbal touches lead to a soft and textured palate full of fresh, tangy cherry and dark hedgerow berries. Ripe, precise and sapid with a long, breezy, balsamic finish, Le Difese should be enjoyed over the next decade. - Decanter Magazine

The white 2022 Terroir Històric Blanc is the regional wine that blends grapes from nine different villages, 75% Garnacha Blanca and 25% Macabeo from different soils, slate, clay, granite and alluvial. The bunches fermented for three to five days in stainless steel, and the wine matured in stainless steel for six months. It has 13% alcohol and mellow acidity, 4.5 grams. It has a spectacular nose that is very expressive, aromatic, clean and open with pungent notes of pollen and beeswax. It's juicy, round and clean with persistent and pungent flavors, not very high in acidity, eminently Mediterranean. Really impressive. - Luis Gutierrez, robertparker.com

There's also a wonderful sense of restraint in the way the acidity and supple texture play with the flavors. 93 Points! Sourced from the Truchard Vineyard in Carneros, this blend of Dijon 1143, Pommard, and 777 was open-vat fermented and aged for 9 months in 30% new French oak. This everyday wine offers elegant, bright red cherry notes and warm brown baking spices, with just a hint of ripe fruit sweetness. The medium-bodied palate is framed by fine, sappy tannins and a nice touch of saline minerality on the finish. It has plenty of grippy acid tension and is thoroughly enjoyable on its own or can carry a meal. - Decanter Magazine

From the winery:

Vineyard: The 2022 vintage is composed of 3 different vineyards from the southern end of Sonoma Valley and Carneros.  Los Chamizal is located at the foot of the Moon Mountain AVA, farmed organically and planted to clones 777, Mt. Eden and Wadenswil. Circle Bar Ranch is farmed organically, located at the southwestern corner of Carneros, and planted to clone 538 also known as Colmar clone. Leveroni Vineyard is fish friendly farmed, situated just a few miles south of the Sonoma square and planted to clone 828.

Vintage: A warm winter with below-average rainfall and a cool start to spring kept the vines dormant late into March.  Spring remained cool and brought moderate amounts of rain all the way to Memorial Day, keeping shoot growth fairly slow until early June. Mild summer weather contributed to slow fruit development until warmer August temperatures prevailed, pushing grapes to maturity quickly.  Harvest began on August 9th with favorable, temperate weather throughout the picking season.

Cellar: Vineyards were harvested between August 26th and September 9th. The grapes were fermented in stainless steel open top tanks with anywhere from 0 to 100% whole cluster inclusion, depending on the lot. The wine was aged for 6 months in 100% neutral and bottled on April 24th, 2023.

93 Points! An elegant nose here with earthy strawberries and violet candies enhanced by smoky depth. Very polished. Light-bodied, this has silky tannins, polite extraction, chewy acidity and good length. Simple but precise, elegant and easy to drink. - JamesSuckling.com

It expresses aromas of damson plums, dark cherries, warm spices and some wild herbs. It's medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins.
