  1. Hugo and Pauline Villa Collines Rhodaniennes Viognier Question d'Équilibre 2023

Hugo and Pauline Villa Collines Rhodaniennes Viognier Question d'Équilibre 2023

    $24.98

This comes from vines planted just after the turn of this century. Soil is thin and shallow, made up of schist and gneiss on top of granite, and harvest is by hand on the early side because the aim here is to have a Viognier with freshness and tension rather than voluptuousness. Ferments are spontaneous and two-thirds of the wine is aged in steel while the rest is brought up in older barrels and demi-muids.

95 Points! This Mosel riesling kabinett is a miniature masterpiece of delicacy. I love the aromas of wildflowers and herbs that are married to a wealth of mineral nuances on the light- to medium-bodied palate. Although a hint of sweetness is perceptible, this has quite a firm core, yet is very filigreed at the long, pristine finish. Drink or hold. - JamesSuckling.com

96 Points! Super elegant and super filigreed, with ravishing aromas of honeysuckle, white peaches and Asian pears, this is a very sophisticated and polished wine for this category. Incredibly refreshing, but also incredibly silky on the light-bodied palate. Then comes the extremely long and precise finish in which floral and wet-stone elements are almost perfectly interwoven. 96 Points! This great Spatlese from the Graacher Himmelreich has everything we hope for from this famous site: excellent concentration and delicacy on the barely medium-bodied palate, terrific slatey character and a broad spectrum of aromas that range from white flowers and peaches to blackcurrants. Super-stony and precise finish. All of this has a wonderful spring-like freshness that makes it irresistible. Drink or hold. - JamesSuckling.com

93 Points! A smoky mineral layer hovers in the backdrop of this streamlined, concentrated Riesling, with beautiful clarity and range to its notes of lime oil, peach and green herbs. Flinty and sultry through the long finish, which features some phenolic extract for a dry impression. - Wine Spectator

97 Points! The sensuous curves of Art Nouveau design and joyful flourishes of rococo both give an idea of what Mosel riesling elegance means, but in a masterpiece like this it takes on a totally distinctive feeling unlike anything else on Planet Wine. The white peach fruit, white flower aromas and slatey minerality all tingle on your palate, then flicker on and on in a totally fascinating manner in the nearly endless finish. The touch of sweetness is already beautifully integrated, although the wine just began a decades-long life. Drink or hold. - JamesSuckling.com

The vines were planted on high elevation plots in Saint-Aubin in the 1980s. There are two soils types: One on white clay-limestone soil, and the other on a thin layer of red soil on lava, which gives all the complexity to this wine according to Fornerot.

After being handpicked, the harvest is lightly crushed then pressed in a pneumatic press. The juice is then allowed to settle and placed by gravity in French oak barrels to ferment with indigenous yeasts. After aging in barrels for 10 months, the wine is placed in vat for a month and is bottled at the estate.

From vines planted in 1988 totaling .75 hectare, the parcel is situated at the one of the highest points and at the limit of the Saint-Aubin appellation on border of the Grand Cru of Chevalier-Montrachet. The soil is very calcareous, the distorted and deformed stones create an outcropping in the shape of dog teeth (hence, the name). After aging in barrels for 12 months (20% of new oak barrels), the wine is placed in vats for 3 months and is bottled at the estate.

The 2023 Jérome Fornerot Saint-Aubin 1er Cru "Murgers des Dents de Chien" is a white Burgundy wine with tasting notes that include Asian pears, apple blossoms, and toasted macadamias on the nose, followed by a full-bodied palate with notes of Jonagold apples, salted lemon, and a refreshing acidity, balanced by limestone minerality and a persistent finish. It's known for its precision, minerality, and rich, yet refreshing character.

93 Points! The 2023 Nisia Las Suertes is 100% Verdejo from very old vines (possibly even the 1880s) and was aged on the lees with bâtonnage for a minimum of 7 months in French oak puncheons and demi-muids. It has more melon ball, hay, crushed stone, and subtly honey nuances that carry to a beautifully textured, layered white with a gorgeous mid-palate, integrated acidity, and a great finish. It's a serious wine that's geared for the dinner table. - Jeb Dunnuck
