From the winery: The Southernmost vineyard in Oregon, this property nearly straddles the California border. Alluvial galets stud the silty, sandy soil that is riddled with serpentine. High in nickel and magnesium, serpentine creates a caustic environment where Riesling becomes concentrated, and usually high in tartaric acid. Farming practices are dry-farmed, sustainable, while working our way toward full organic farming.

After skin contact, the lot is placed into the press along with the stems (reserved from destemming), and we begin a press cycle of 4-6 hours. Using gravity, the free run and press juice is collected into a chilled, stainless steel tank where it will settle for 24 hours, after which we rack into Austrian Cask, cement egg and barrel with fine and heavy lees. Native fermentation takes place in egg, and neutral barrel. After nine months of lees contact, the wine is racked and blended. No cold stabilization. Given the residual sugar in each wine, we cross-flow the wine before bottling.

96 Points! The aromas of dried flowers and peaches are very cool and delicate. In fact they are only just beginning to unfurl. Super-focused and salty on the very concentrated, medium-bodied palate. 95 Points! The 2023 Riesling Pfaffenberg has subtle citrus and a darker aspect that disappears on the palate. The body is zesty, driven and energetic, with stony determination and citrus wings, grapefruit, tangerine and all the tangy stuff. Despite this soaring nature, this is anchored in stone. 93 Points! A medium sweet Spätlese from the Rheingau icon Weil. This late-picked Riesling shows the ethereal clarity and power the variety can have. This wine is an assemblage of some of the estate's top vineyards blended with fruit from surrounding non-Grosse Lagen sites. It has charming aromatics, rich pear, Meyer lemon, and beguiling floral spice. The palate balances viscosity and ripeness with juicy, mouthwatering acidity. The lack of botrytis and the sterling minerality clarify this affordable bottling. 94+ Points! The 2019 Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese is very clear and elegant on the discreet and subtle nose that intertwines very fine fruit and slate aromas. Remarkably piquant and vital on the palate, the acidity cuts the sweet and perfectly ripe fruit like a knife. This is highly stimulating in its piquancy and lingering salinity.
