Alain Jaume Vacqueyras Grande Garrigue 2023
93 Points! While never as big or concentrated as the Mazane, I still tend to prefer this cuvée from Alaine Jaume due to its complexity and just sheer charm. Spicy red and black fruits, Provençal garrigue, and tons of spice all shine from the 2023 Vacqueyras Grande Garrigue, and it's medium-bodied, has a seamless, elegant mouthfeel, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It was aged primarily in tanks with a small portion in barrel. This complex, incredibly Provençal beauty will drink well over the coming 8-10 years. - Jeb Dunnuck
Châteauneuf-du-Pape gets all the attention.
But some of the best values in the Rhône Valley come from just outside its borders.
Vacqueyras is one of those places.
Located just northeast of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, it produces wines from the same grapes, grown in similar conditions, often delivering the same richness and character at a fraction of the price.
The Alain Jaume Vacqueyras “Grande Garrigue” 2023 is a perfect example.
The blend is classic Southern Rhône: 65 percent Grenache, 20 percent Syrah, 10 percent Mourvèdre, and 5 percent Cinsault, all from old vines grown on the garrigue-covered plateau, where wild herbs like thyme and rosemary influence the character of the wine.
That garrigue note matters.
It adds a layer of complexity you can actually taste. A subtle herbal, savory edge that lifts the fruit and makes the wine more compelling.
In the glass, this wine is all about pleasure.
Silky texture, explosive fruit, and a seamless, rounded profile that makes it incredibly easy to drink. Blackberry, raspberry, spice, and pepper all come together in a wine that feels both rich and balanced.
There’s no heavy oak here.
Just pure Rhône character.
Critics have taken notice, with high scores across the board, recognizing it as one of the top wines of the vintage for Vacqueyras.
And then there’s the price.
$26.98.
For a wine that delivers this level of quality and drinks in the same lane as much more expensive Châteauneuf-du-Pape, that’s a serious opportunity.
If you love Rhône wines, this is one you don’t overthink.
