1792 Small Batch Bourbon
The Small Batch is 1792’s flagship offering. It is a high rye bourbon, which means that the composition of the grain is a high percentage of rye in relation to the corn that leads the bill. The mash bill itself is 75% corn, 15% rye and 10% malted barley -- using rye as the second most sizeable grain makes for a bolder, spicier bourbon. But even with a high rye component and such bold spice, the 1792 retains a masterful elegance.
The nose opens with gingersnap cookies, burnt orange and charred oak melding together in the glass. On the first sip I taste salted peanut brittle, clove and cinnamon. The finish is long, and the mouthfeel is lean but with a pleasant sweetness that lingers for a while. It is a wonder to me how this can sell for under $30. At 46.8% this certainly doesn’t need water, you can sip it on its own, add a cube of ice or use it to make a killer old-fashioned.
